Kissing History

Pucking Up Through The Ages

Kissing: the intimate act used to express feelings o  f love, passion, affection, respect, friendship, greetings and many more. A kiss can vary widely in different cultures, for example, a kiss can be used in formal greetings, or ritual and traditional formalities, or for religious reasons, as well as being used as an intimate expression of love. But where did kissing come from? How has the act evolved over time?

Kissing Through History

Ancient Indian Kissing
The earliest evidence of kissing came from Indian Vedic Sanskrit texts that date back to around 1500 BC. In these texts there are descriptions of people kissing. However, while the texts don’t mention the word ‘kiss’, there are references to ‘licking’ and ‘drinking moisture of the lips’, which historians believe refers to the act of intimate kissing. There is also an epic Indian poem called ‘Mahabharata’ that describes the act of kissing on the lips as a sign of affection. The ‘Mahabharata’ was originally passed down orally for several hundred years, before being written down and recorded properly around 350 AD. It was also around this point in time when the Vatsyayana Kamasutra (better known as the Kama Sutra) was established. Considered to be the standard work on human sexual behaviors, the Karma Sutra included an entire section on the different ways of lavishing kisses on a lover.

Roman Empire Kissing
Kissing doesn’t really surface in the Western world until the days of the Roman Empire, where Romans would use kisses to greet family and friends, as well as express feelings of love, and to pay their respects to ruler’s by kissing their hand. The Romans had three differentcategories for kissing, ‘Osculum’ was a kiss on the cheek, ‘Basium’ was a kiss on the lips, and ‘Savolium’ was a deep kiss. The Romans are responsible for beginning out modern day traditions when it comes to kissing. In ancient Rome, a couple became betrothed by kissing passionately on the lips in front of a group of people. The term ‘sealed with a kiss’ also comes from ancient Rome, where were used like handshakes to seal legal and business agreements and even during political campaigns.
Religious Kissing History
In the early Christian Church, Christians would use kissing as a way to greet one another. This greeting, known as an ‘Osculum Pacis’, or holy kiss, was believed to transfer the spirit between the two people. It was also used to establish family bond between the members of the church and to strengthen the community, as well as separating Christians and non-Christians.
Kissing in the Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, kissing was a demonstration of a person’s social standing.  Subjects of a King would kiss his ring, robe, hands or even the ground beneath his feet to show respect. This kind of respect was also shown toward the Pope. A kiss was also used as a greeting between feudal lords and vassals as a show of trust. It was also during this time that many men did not know how to read and write, so a kiss was used as a legal way to seal contracts, as it had been done in ancient Rome. An ‘X’ would be drawn on the line and kissed, making it legal. This symbol of a kiss has been carried over into modern day, with ‘X’ being written to represent a kiss.
Kissing Today
During the Industrial Revolution, the kiss became replaced by the handshake as a form of agreement between to people when it came to legal and business matters. By 1872, Charles Darwin had theorized that due to the global diversity and popularity of kissing, humans must possess an innate desire to want to connect with others in this way. Darwin surmised that kissing is rooted deep within our evolutionary past, but is influenced by our social-cultural traditions, rules and customs.
The term “French kiss” came into the English language around 1923 as an insult towards the French culture which was thought to be overly concerned with sex. In France, it’s called a tongue kiss or soul kiss because if done right, it feels as if two souls are merging.
Kissing occurs in most cultures around the world today, but there are many different views on what is appropriate when it comes to displays of affection. In Middle Eastern countries public displays of affection, including holding hands, cuddling and kissing can be punishable by law. In some Asian countries, while not illegal, kissing is considered a private activity, and PDA is frowned upon.
Kissing Conclusion
Scientists, scholars and anthropologists are divided over whether kissing is a learned or instinctual behaviour. There are also many theories behind where kissing evolved from, including when mothers orally passed chewed food to their infants during the weaning period, or that kissing evolved from prospective mates sniffing each other’s pheromones to check for biological compatibility. Another theory suggests it was used to judge a person as a potential mate. Whatever the reason for the development of kissing, it has come through history as a symbol and expression of human feelings.

Does Dating Require A Dress Code?

Does Dating Require A Dress Code?
It seems there’s no end to the demanding challenges that we face daily.
We have to be at work at a certain time,  we have appointments and events we must attend. This list is so exhaustive that style, when we’re at our leisure, becomes that one area of self-expression we can manage on our own terms. Fashion is one of the greatest ways through which we express our mood, personality and creativity.

But even that is sometimes compromised when women enter relationships. The thinking is that a good woman wants to provide for her man in any way possible; however, does that desire have to extend to the way she chooses to dress? Isn’t that a very personal process and decision? Believe it or not, many women are facing the dilemma of dressing for their man today.
“Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin’ with
no make-up on, That’s when you’re the prettiest, I hope that you don’t take it wrong.” Drake’s popular line was one I always admired and truly identified with until my whole look changed for a man.

I have always been a no boundaries kind of gal when it came to fashion. Bright colors, fun jewelry, flats and jeans were my uniform.

My man claimed to love me, but he couldn’t stand my look. He always preferred for me to wear skirts and wanted me to wear more neutral colors. At the time, I didn’t see this as a problem; I mean why wouldn’t I change my style if it could make my boyfriend happy? But as I reflect on it today, I cannot believe that I had compromised myself to abide by his standards. When I changed elements of my style for a man, I compromised who I am. When we broke up, I promised myself I’d never do that again.

Now, as I proudly walk down the street in my neon green jumpsuit and plum sandals, it’s clear that those days of compromising my style and my personality are far behind me.

However, I am troubled when I come in to contact with women who have given up their sense of style to cater to a man like I did. Why are we so quick to do that?

Now, there is nothing wrong with looking good for your man. I am by all means a strong advocate of this. However, I am a stronger advocate of looking good for yourself first. How are we as women suppose to gain respect if we are so quick to give up our parts of who we are to please our mates?
I believe that real men would never pressure a woman into dressing differently than she desires to. It’s a form of control that we shouldn’t stand for.

How To Stay Married

Simple Advice From A Woman Who Plans On Reaching Her 50th Wedding Anniversary

From the moment I accepted the diamond ring everyone I knew had advice on how to stay married and survive fifty years of marriage with success. We currently live in a country where there is more than a fifty percent divorce rate and it's only looking worse as time goes on. Before saying "I do," I made sure to ask those I trusted to offer advice on how to stay married fifty years or until death do us part. Not only was I surprised at some advice gathered, some seemed too simple and too difficult. I can say with confidence I've been happily married for over a year and a half and have given most of the credit to the advice I remember from those around me. You may be saying to yourself that a year and half isn't something to boast about in marriage but I will confidently counter attack your reasoning by simply saying two words: Kim Kardashian.

to aid in remembering these vital ways to stay married I've created an acronym that spells out "Stay Married." In the best of cases people would be seeking to stay happily married but unfortunately my guess is if you're researching this on Google you'll be content with successful advice regarding simply "staying married." Make sure to read through the article to find some great resources that I've compiled below and remember Ben Franklin once said "Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards."

S-hare Stories

Sharing stories in a marriage brings you closer and allows you to get to know a part of your spouse you haven't met before. Take time to share stories about your childhood, your day at work, your hopes, and your fears. It may feel strange at first telling stories about waking up on Christmas morning as a four year old or braking your foot in high school playing soccer but before you know it you and your significant other will enjoy listening to these stories and feel closer.

T-ell the Truth

There isn't room for white lies in marriage. Tell the truth always. Most marital issues stem from trust problems. Get into the habit of telling the truth all the time. If you struggle with extreme exaggeration or small white lies discuss this with your spouse and work together. Sometimes in our society we don't realize we aren't telling the truth in day to day discussions regarding simple tasks. Be reflective and commit to be honest with one another all the time.

A-lways Listen

Whether you're a female or a male-listen. When one feels listened to they feel respected, loved, and appreciated. Take time to practice active listening and engage with your husband/wives words and emotions. Don't always speak back or jump to conclusions. Simply listen and support them for as long as they need.

Y-ell Less

Better yet, don't yell at all. We all know you and your spouse will have arguments from time to time. Use the common advice of counting to ten or taking a break from speaking to one another to gather your thoughts. When one yells the other person becomes defensive and heightens their voice as well. Yelling doesn't solve anything and although it may feel great in the moment-usually hurtful words and actions result. Also make a point to avoid marriage "bad words" such as: hate, leave, worthless, and divorce. My husband and I actually have committed to one another never to use the "d-word." This helps us in our arguments and allows us to trust one another while discussing hard issues instead of being distracted by empty threats and manipulations.

M-ake Time for One Another

Time is vital to our day to day functioning and can make or break a marriage. If you are like any other busy American chances are you have jobs, kids, community/religious activities, and other things that take time away from spending alone time with your spouse. Do not just wait for opportune times to invest time with your spouse-make them. Plan dates, schedule appointments, and protect your time with one another. Don't allow other things to get in the way of your Monday night dinner or Sunday afternoon walk. What might "feel" like a good reason to skip out from time together might not be. Pay close attention.

A-gree to Disagree

You're not going to agree on everything. You can make your marriage work and stay married by agreeing to disagree. Whether it's religious views, politics, or money work together as much as possible and then let it go. You married your spouse because you love them and enjoy them, not because they are your clone.

R-un the Home Together

Take turns running the home together. Pick your favorite chores and do them. Work side by side and communicate what is working and what isn't. Do not fall into a stereotypical sexist mindset and allow one another the freedom to experiment with what you do best around the home. You may be surprised to find that your wife cuts the lawn better than you or your husband makes a better souffle to take to the neighbors.

R-espect Eachother

Discuss what respect means with one another. Once you have a good working definition of respect-give it! Many marriages end because one partner doesn't feel respected. It is important to remember that respect is different for everyone. That being said, respect usually includes honesty, listening, and trusting.

I-nitiate Intamacy

Have sex! Have lots of sex! Intimacy keeps a marriage going when times are difficult. There will be days you don't feel like having sex-do it anyways. Not only is sex good for your relationship; it reduces stress by releasing endorphins. Initiating intimacy tells your spouse they are desired and loved. Do this as much as possible.

E-njoy Other Company/Have Your Own Friends

Don't rely on one another for all of your encouragement, entertainment, or emotional support. Find and invest in other relationships in your life. Married people who have friends usually stay married longer because they have separate interests and activities. This also gives you and your significant other more to talk about!

D-on't Entertain Drama

You know that friend that is always upset about something ridiculous? Don't be them. From the beginning of your marriage don't entertain drama. Simply don't make much out of things that don't deserve your time and energy. Some married couples get bored and make up arguments just for entertainment. This can become a very deadly habit and result in communication issues and ultimately divorce. Find entertainment through doing things together such as: hiking, skiing, playing board games and volunteering.
In conclusion the above acronym will provide you with simple (but sometimes difficult) ways to stay married. I would suggest printing this article out and putting it somewhere you will see it everyday. Discuss these simple steps with your partner and work together towards a longer, healthier marriage. I hope one day to be able to return and confirm this advice on my fiftieth wedding anniversary.

18 Things Women Can Do That I Just Don’t Understand

/ /

I have long suspected that I am bad at being a woman. There are things that other women can do that I am terrible at. There are days that I go out wearing giant boys’ sweatpants, my dad’s old football sweatshirt and a red knit cap. I forget that I’m supposed to try to look nice. There are other days when I try really hard to look nice, and then I see about 50 girls on the subway who all are much better at it. Their outfits are both more original and more trendy. Their lipstick has not ended up on their teeth. They always have a drawer full of makeup somewhere, and they know what each type of makeup thingy does. They have an intimate knowledge of flirty, confident, suggestively withdrawn, adorable, fascinating body language. I am in awe. I wonder how they do it. In my head, I keep a growing list of things that women can do that are a mystery to me, in the hope that one day it will all make sense. One day, I will unlock their secrets. After the jump, some of the things woman do that I just don’t understand.
1. They wear power ponytails. You know, where it’s all sleek, and instead of a hair tie, there’s just more hair, wrapped around? And it’s pulled back tight, and little hairs don’t escape. Does no one have frizzy hair anymore?

2. Their hair is always the same. They have figured out their “look.” I don’t know how to have a “look.”
3. Their bra straps stay up. At least one of mine is always halfway down my arm and I am trying to surreptitiously fish it out while gracefully interacting with my husband’s boss at a holiday party. You can imagine how graceful that looks.
4. They say “no thank you” to dessert, and they mean it. I almost never say that, and when I do, it’s because I just ate half a pizza and I might barf if I eat more. And even then, I will share your dessert. Even if there isn’t a second spoon.
5. They are good at yoga. Downward facing what?
6. They never have sweat stains under their arms. Even in the summer, when they are wearing something long-sleeved. Because of this, they can wear white silk blouses without ruining them. Whereas I can’t imagine spending money on a white silk blouse. They are expensive, and I am a sweaty beast.
7. They almost never have a random hair growing on their chin for God-knows-how-long. Whereas I have one that sprouts and it takes me way too long to notice it’s there. Sometimes my husband points it out to me.
8. They never seem to have pubic hair when they wear a bathing suit. Where does it go? Waxing? Shaving? Sugaring? Magic?
9. They use girly razors and girly shaving cream and girly deodorant with pictures of pastel-colored flowers and butterflies on it. None of these things work for me. All of my personal hygiene products were made for men. Men seem to be expected to sweat and smell. I do both of these things a lot. Women, apparently, don’t.
10. Their legs are almost always smoothly shaved, without tons of little red bumps. Their legs are sometimes naked in the middle of winter, bump-free. That look is achieved with a girly razor, I think. I wouldn’t know.
11. They put their smooth legs into skinny jeans. Like, really skinny ones. I don’t understand how to get my legs in those things.
12. They buy (and maybe even use) perfume. This has to be true, because every pop star and clothing designer has a fragrance line, and someone other than misguided boyfriends must be keeping them in business. Once, a long time ago, I wrote some ad copy for a fragrance company. I had to smell the perfume first, to write about it. I smelled it, gagged, and then made some pretty-sounding stuff up. I think I said “jasmine kisses” or something. It was a lie.
13. They walk naturally in really high heels. Unless there’s a strap, the backs of my feet pop out of most high heels. I can’t tell if this is an issue with my arches, the shape of my feet, the texture of the skin on my heels, or just me, as a person. I really, really want to learn how to walk successfully in high heels. I think this would make me a lot sexier.
14. Their eyeliner goes around their whole eye in a smooth, uninterrupted line. They know how to pull back the tender skin on the bottom lid, exposing the pink, gory flesh under eyeball, just to draw that perfect line. I can barely write this without cringing and tearing up. Once, I got my makeup done in preparation for going to a really fancy party. It cost more than I could possibly have imagined beforehand, and I almost injured the woman who was trying to do my eyeliner. I also cried. I also almost blinded myself. And then I had to walk around in high heels all night. One of them popped off as I walked in the door.
15. They know what to do with their hands. When I don’t have pockets or a can of soda or a pen or a cat, I am at a total loss. I usually clasp them in front of me, and then wiggle each finger individually, and then wait for a dramatic pause to flip them over backwards, cracking all of the knuckles at once. It’s something to do.
16. Their boots are surprisingly delicate-looking. No matter what shape boot I purchase, I always look like I’m going on an all-terrain expedition.
17. They still have a lot of friends from college. Somehow they seemed to have weathered the post-college transition where friends move away, do weird crap with their lives and cease to have stuff in common with you.
18. They always seem to have new clothes. They are always wearing new outfits, even if you see them all the time. These outfits never include dad’s old football sweatshirt.
