She has appeared in roles as diverse as Angela Chase in My So-Called Life, as Juliet in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, as Kate Brewster in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, as Yvaine in Stardust and as Temple Grandin in the HBO TV film Temple Grandin. She currently has a lead role as Carrie Mathison in the Showtime series Homeland.

However, she withdrew from public life in 2006 and 2007. During this time, she turned down leading roles in, amongst others, The Devil Wears Prada and Casino Royale.
